Noble Cleveland E. Woolard (Cleve) was born on October 26th in Bethel, North Carolina to Dewey and Magalene Woolard. Cleve graduated from New Bern High School and attended Craven Community College. Upon graduation, he went to work for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and after thirty-three years, retired as a Division Bituminous Engineer in September 2003. After his retirement he went back to work with NCDOT as an Engineering Technician until 2021.
Cleve and his wife Patsy live in New Bern; Patsy retired from NCDHHS. The Woolard’s are members of Trinity United Methodist Church in New Bern. They have two children; Selena House and Mark Sain and four grandchildren; Aaron & Aiden Holt, Zandra & Kira Sain and Great Grandson Parker Corbin.
Cleve became a Master Mason on October 22, 1981 at Berne Lodge, Masonic # 724 in New Bern. He presided as Master of the Lodge in 1991. Cleve was awarded Life Membership in Berne Lodge in 2011 where he has coached many men through the degrees of masonry. He chaired the lodge’s annual fundraiser selling barbeque chicken plates for over 30 years with proceeds going to our Masonic Charities. Cleve joined the New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies of Freemasonry in April of 1982 and joined Sudan Shriners on January 22, 1983 and later joined the New Bern Shrine Club. Cleve became a member of the Sudan Chef Crew in June of 1987; he served as the Director of the Chef Crew for three years beginning in January of 2006. Cleve was instrumental in starting the annual Reverse Drawings held as the fundraiser for the Chef Crew to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children. He has been active in the New Bern Shrine Club and has proudly served as Chairman of the Shriner’s Fish Fry for many years. Cleve was elected in October 2006 to the New Bern Court Royal Order of Jesters #145 and served as Director in 2014.
Cleve takes an active part in his community as a Volunteer Fireman in West of New Bern Fire Department where he is Past Chief, Line Officer and Past President he has also served as President of the Craven County Fireman’s Association. He is a Certified Fire Instructor through the N. C. Department of Insurance and Community Colleges. Cleve was awarded The Order of The Long Leaf Pine by the Governor for his community service. Of all the things Cleve has been involved in, his greatest love is the Shrine children that we help and those in our fraternity that are dedicated to helping them.
Noble Cleve was first person in our Shrine Temple Building after it flooded on September 18, 2018. New Bern has been the home of Sudan since 1917 and will continue to be but right now we do not have a home. He and the Divan are starting the process of planning for our home and “Building our Future in 2022”!
